A Question for Our Clients and Friends

Published September 1, 2012 | By Jeremy Simpson

So we have been really good about sending out newsletters to our subscribers… oh wait… no we haven’t.

You know the story of the cobbler whose children had no shoes?  Well that has kind of been us here at SixVine.  We’ve been so busy working on OTHER PEOPLE’S websites, newsletters and social media, that we have been kind of remiss in keeping up to date on our own.  Well no more!  We will now begin to put shoes on our own children!

But that begs the question: What would you like to know about?  Between Michael and myself we have a wealth of knowledge to pass on.  Michael, all by himself, could probably instruct you in how to make an award winning television program, after all he has been involved in several of them and even created one himself.  While I could probably tell you how to drink beer…. or make beer…. or, okay make a WordPress website all on your own.

So what kind of information would you like to see posted to our newsletter?

Website Optimizations For Search Engines (5 of 5)

Published June 4, 2012 | By Jeremy Simpson

It’s that time again. This is the last part of my “Website Optimization for Search Engines”, I am sure we’ll be touching on the subject again sometime in the future but as I said at the beginning of this series, this is simply my top five list of things you can do to improve your Websites Optimization.

Last week I wrote about Header Tags and their role in SEO. This week I am going to be talking about on page content. Please don’t think that this list was in order of importance. In my mind, writing good on page content is probably the most important thing you can do for your website.

Item Five: On Page Content

What is On Page Content?: What you are reading right now is on page content. The words above and below, all the words on the page is on page content. It is what your visitor reads when they visit your page but it is also what search engines read when they visit your page. Granted, search engines don’t understand (yet) what is written but they are looking at the individual words an trying to decipher what the page is about. They do this by skipping common words and cataloging keywords. They keep track of the keywords on the page and count the number of times they are used in relation to the other words on the page. From this they get a keyword density as a percentage.

In doing research for THIS article I took a look at last weeks article and found out that I used the keyword phrase “Flying Monkeys” FIVE TIMES. Yeah, that might have been a mistake, but with the number of other words on the page the density was less than one percent, so I think I am okay.

Video Marketing for Your Business – Part Three

Published May 30, 2012 | By Michael Simpson

This was originally going to be the last in a three part series on using video marketing to promote your business but looking at the topics I want to cover I have made an executive decision and expanded this to a four part series.

In Part One you learned that video marketing is no longer just the tool of Nike, Heineken or Microsoft but can be an effective arrow in your quiver of marketing implements. We also looked at inexpensive or free production tools.

In Part Two we looked at some of the basic elements of pre-production which included what to say in your video, problems that arise when the wrong location is chosen and an over view of lighting issues. If you missed either one or both of these then I would suggest you go there now so that you will fully understand what we are covering today.

In this post we will cover production and post-production and will save distribution for the last in the series.
The Back Story – For this example I am recruiting you to be the writer, producer, director, location scout, cameraman, sound recordist and editor. Oh yes, you will be the star also.

Website Optimizations For Search Engines (4 of 5)

Published May 29, 2012 | By Jeremy Simpson

Hello again! Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend. Now back to business.

Last week we talked about meta descriptions and their role in good SEO for websites if you missed it check it out.  Toady’s topic is Heading or Header Tags and is a bit simpler to grasp, so lets jump right in.

Item Four: Headings and Heading Tags

What is a Header Tag?: Unlike the other things we have been talking about in this series, Headings ARE seen by visitors to your site. Header tags are bits of HTML code that make the selected text bigger, bolder, and sometimes a different color. There are different levels of header tags, from H1 (the largest) to H6 (usually the smallest). These bits of code call out to your style sheet and tell the browser to make the selected text a certain size, weight, color, or just about anything.

Website Optimizations For Search Engines (3 of 5)

Published May 21, 2012 | By Jeremy Simpson

Last week, in part 2 of Website Optimization for Search Engines, I talked about the importance of meta keywords, this week it’s meta descriptions.  If you missed it be sure to check it out.

Item Three: Meta Description

Meta Descriptions are much more important then the average small business owner thinks. At least that is the conclusion I must reach after seeing so many meta descriptions done incorrectly or missing all together. Let’s dive right in and I’ll explain.

What is a Meta Description?: Unlike meta keywords, a meta description IS seen by potential visitors to your website. It’s not seen on your page but on the SERP. Here is a picture of a Meta Description on a SERP.
