SixVine Media – Social Media

Providing Social Media Branding and Management

Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have become an integral part of communicating with current and future customers. Most businesses have gotten on the social media bandwagon but how many of them are doing it right? There are many ways to use social media correctly for business but there are even more ways to do it wrong. Here are just a few.

Is your business using Social Media properly?

Are you using your social media page as your company’s website?

Several times we have heard from small businesses that they don’t need a company website because their Facebook page works in that capacity for them. This is not only wrong it’s risky.

You don’t own your Facebook profile or account. That is owned by Facebook. They could take it away at anytime.

What are the chances that Facebook would actually do that? Slim to none. BUT, Facebook is constantly changing. They change their look all the time, you have no control over that. They change their terms and conditions, you have no control over that. What if you wake up tomorrow and they have decided that you can no longer list phone numbers on your Facebook page? What if they decide that you can’t advertise certain types of products? What if they’ve banned you all together? If that happened would you be able to still communicate with all your clients?

Most social media companies make their money through ad revenue. Ads you have no control over.

Using Facebook ads to promote your business is a great idea, and your competitors might already be doing that. If Facebook is acting as your main website, then your customers could be seeing your competitors ads right on YOUR page. Does this seem like a good idea to you?

The PROPER way to use social media.

Social media is great, it’s awesome and it can even be fun sometimes. But your company’s social media strategy should be to drive traffic to your website where you control the content.

Does your company have a Facebook profile or a Facebook page?

We’ve held several Facebook for Business classes locally and were surprised at how many companies didn’t know the difference between a Facebook PROFILE and a Facebook PAGE. We have even seen a couple companies that had a Facebook GROUP thinking it was the same thing. There are several difference between a profile and a page.

Do you know the difference?

This is the main difference. A profile get’s friends, a page gets likes. So you may be thinking to yourself that a company with friends is a great idea. No, it’s not. Facebook currently limits the number of “Friends” a profile can have to 5000. That number might seem like a huge number to a small company, but what happens when you hit that number? What do you do? You’ll have to create a Facebook page and then ask ALL your companies current “friends” to go “like” your new page. Trust us when we say you’ll never get the full number to convert. And now you are stuck updating TWO things on Facebook, your company’s profile and your company’s page. Congratulations, you just doubled your workload.

To give someone else control of a profile you have to give them your username and password.

Say you want to assign an employee to do some of your company’s updates to an employee. Well if your company has a profile instead of a page you will have to give that employee your username and password. Now they have total control over that account. They could do anything, including changing the password so YOU can’t get back in.

With a Facebook PAGE you can make other users admins to that page. What does this mean? It means you retain control of the site but they can still make posts as your company. It means you can revoke that admin status at anytime you wish. It means you can sleep sound at night.

So we say again: Profiles for People – Pages for Business.

How often do you monitor your social media pages?

We’ve found that business owners answer this in one of two ways: Too Often or Not Enough. Both of those answers are wrong. We know that social media can be a time sink. Get on Facebook in the morning and the next thing you know it’s time for lunch. Business owners have too much else on their plate to be wasting that kind of time on social networking. But not checking it often enough is bad as well, especially if you have an active community. Not only do you miss out on communicating with your customers you also run the risk of heading off negative comments before they blow up into a fire storm.
