We started SixVine Media because we noticed a tremendous lack of local business websites that were done right.  Most of the websites for local businesses in the Phoenix Arizona area suffer from at least one of the following:

1. A complete LACK of an online presence. No website at all.
2. A website built 10 years ago that hasn’t been updated since.
3. Websites that had little or no Search Engine Optimization.
4. Business completely misses the point of having a website.

Why do business owners continue to make these same mistakes over and over again?  Here are just a few of the reasons we have heard over the years and our counter argument for each.

Reason #1

• “My business only serves the local area. I don’t need a website for that.”

Then how is your business going to be found by potential customers? The Yellow Pages? Yellow Page advertising is dead my friend. When was the last time you even carried the yellow page book in from the curb let alone opened the book to find a product or service? I am willing to bet that you take it right to your recycle bin.

People use the internet now to easily find local products and services.  If your business doesn’t have a website it’s missing out on a LOT of sales.

Over 50% of queries on search engines are for LOCAL goods and services.

Reason #2

• “I have a website, it hasn’t changed in over 10 years but that doesn’t matter.”

You’re seriously telling us to our face that NOTHING about your business has changed in the past ten years?  If that is in fact the case you still need to update your website regularly.  If for no other reason than to catch up with current technology.  Facebook and Twitter weren’t even around ten years ago.  If you aren’t interacting with your clients with social media you need to and if you are but don’t tie that in with your website then you are missing the entire point of social media.  At the very least you need to need to update the look of your website.

Everyone knows that a first good impression is important.  What kind of impression is your website leaving on potential customers if it looks outdated and hasn’t been updated since Clinton was in office?

You have FIVE seconds to make a good first impression when someone visits your website and about 30 to show them the information they are looking for.

Reason #3

• “Having a website with all my products and services on the same page works fine.”

Not true for so many reasons.  First of all potential customers get side tracked easily.  Bombarding them with ALL of your information on the same page is not a good idea.  Secondly search engines use the content on the page (along with other factors) to determine what the page is about.  If you list all of your services on one page your website MIGHT show up if people are looking for ALL of those services in one search, but what is the likely hood of that happening?  Plus, by listing all your services on one page you are missing out on optimizing the page for a single product or service.

For best results you need a separate page for each of your products or services with SEO targeted at that product or service.  If you just clump them all together search engines get confused as to what, exactly, the page is about.

The more decisions a potential customer has to make the less likely they are to buy.

Reason #4

• “Our website lists the products or services we offer. That’s all people need.”

Who would you rather purchase a product or service from, an unknown, faceless company or a friend?  Having just your products or services, pages of information, your phone number or email address on your website might get someone to purchase from you but only if their is no other choice.  You have a chance to put a human face on your company, tell potential customers who they would be dealing with, something about the history of your company.  ANYTHING is better than just bland, no personality, lists of services.

By taking advantage of pictures and videos your potential client can acquaint themselves with you and your company making it easier for them to make the decision to buy, call or email.

Big stores don’t have greeters because they like spending money.  They are putting a human face on their establishment as soon as you walk through the doors.
